If you have been wondering how to trick yourself into drinking more water, you have come to the right place. I used to have a massive aversion to drinking water. Water was the last thing on my mind.
I would drink sodas, juices, beer, and just about anything else to avoid water. Now, I don’t drink any of that stuff and I absolutely love drinking water.
In this article, we will discuss what worked for me when I knew that I needed to step up and drink more water. I am not saying that this method will work for everyone, but get excited knowing that you certainly can change.
Personally, I started drinking water because I wanted to build muscle and get in better shape. I was a very skinny guy, which means that girls did not want to date me and I was completely unconfident. I even wrote an article about drinking water for muscle growth.

Now let’s learn how to trick yourself into drinking more water.
Drink room temperature water
Growing up, my dad would always load his glass with ice and drink water that way. I always just assumed that was the only way to do it. It didn’t take me long to learn that when you drink room temperature water, you can drink it fast and consume lots of it.
I recently had a kidney stone, which was really scary. But one of the main ways to get it out of your body is to drink a ton of water. Obviously, it would be difficult to drink a ton of ice water, so I had to go with room temperature water.
This helped me drink a lot. In fact, I drank 2 gallons of water per day. And yes, I was urinating probably every 15 minutes. This helped move the kidney stone out quicker. Most importantly, it reminded me that drinking room temperature water is way easier than ice cold water.
If you are interested, I even wrote an article about working out with a kidney stone.
Use smoothie straws for drinking water
This is my main secret for tricking yourself into drinking more water. Smoothie straws are 2-3 times wider than a normal straw. This means that more water ends up in your mouth.
If you want to purchase them on Amazon, these are the ones that I use and recommend.
Once I started using a smoothie straw, my water consumption rate went up a ton. I used to be a cup only guy. I thought it was more masculine to drink straight out of the cup. Soon, I realized that I don’t care about any of that and water consumption came first.
Smoothie straws also have bonus benefits like actually drinking a smoothie or a protein shake. Have you ever struggled to put on muscle? There is a 1000 calorie protein shake for that.
I use my smoothie straws in conjunction with my RTIC 30oz Tumbler. There is a perfect slot in the lid for a smoothie straw that holds the straw in place.
Try a natural water flavoring
When I first started on my water guzzling journey, drinking water wasn’t good enough for me. I needed some sort of transition. That is when I discovered the incredibly diverse world of natural water flavoring.
What do I mean by natural water flavoring? These are products in either powder or liquid form that you mix with water to enhance the flavor. Not all water flavorings are created equal however.
It’s all about the ingredients. What you are looking for on the nutrition label is ZERO calories, and minimal ingredients. You also should be looking for any crazy sounding ingredients that sound sketchy or you don’t know what they are.
A great example is the gatorade g zero flavor enhancer. Looking at the nutrition facts seems great at first with zero calories. Then I look at the ingredients. Red 40, silicon dioxide, potassium phosphate. I don’t know what any of those are, but I know that they are artificial and probably not good for you.
Here are 3 of my recommended water flavor enhancers
- Stur Classic Variety Pack – Amazon Link
- True Lemon Water Enhancer – Amazon Link
- Water Drops – Amazon Link
My best advice here is to do your own research and understand what matters to you. I don’t use water enhancers very often anymore just because I am content with drinking only water.
Measure it out
This may seem pretty obvious, but measuring out your water, at least at first, is critical to your success. Have you ever seen those bodybuilder guys walking around the gym with a gallon of water?
They know how important water intake is on physical health and fitness. It could be as simple as buying a gallon of water from the supermarket and drinking one gallon per day. Just refill it at the end of each day so that you have a full gallon for your next.
You can also just make it a goal to drink 8 cups full of water per day, or something like that.
If that doesn’t work for you, you can buy a motivational gallon water bottle on Amazon. These things are great, because they literally have the time stamped on the bottle so that you can know how much to drink.
We measure everything in our lives whether consciously or subconsciously. Let’s make it a conscious priority to step up and improve our health by measuring our water intake.
Make it a game
This can be very fun and rewarding if done properly. Let me give you an example. If you don’t finish a half gallon of water before lunch, you have to do 20 pushups.
Does that not sound like fun? Well, this is a great example of a win-win situation. If you do finish your water before lunch, then you are on track for your water intake goals. If you don’t finish your water before lunch, then doing 20 pushups will at least push you further towards your fitness goals.
Ok, so maybe that doesn’t sound like a fun game to some people. How about every time that someone in a meeting says “synergy,” you have to take a sip of water. Maybee nobody says synergy in your office. Just replace that word with whatever word is said the most.
One of the funnest things that you can do is drink water like it’s an alcoholic drinking game. Don’t knock it until you try it.
Main Point: How to trick yourself into drinking more water
You learned a lot about how to trick yourself into drinking more water, didn’t we? Drinking room temperature water with a smoothie straw is my best method for consuming a lot of water.
Some people are different and may prefer to add a water flavoring, or maybe make it into a drinking game.
It doesn’t matter what method you use to consume more water, as long as you DO consume more water. Drinking water is a necessary part of life and your health.
Mayo clinic says that men should drink 3.7 liters of water per day (almost a gallon). And women should drink 2.7 liters of water per day (almost ¾ gallon). If we adhere to these principles, we are laying the foundation for a healthy body.
